This 2-day immersive journey takes you through the heart of the Mae Taeng region, blending scenic jungle trekking with authentic cultural exchanges in hilltribe villages. Highlights include refreshing swim at the stunning Mok Fa Waterfall and navigating the Mae Taeng River on a traditional bamboo raft.

WHAT WE’LL DO

Day 1: Market Flavours & Karen Culture

Your journey begins with a morning pickup from your hotel in Chiang Mai. Enjoy a scenic drive through the mountains as you head toward Chiang Rai.

08:00 – 09:30: Hotel Pick-up & Local Market: Departure by pick-up truck or van. Stop at the Mae Malai local market to buy fresh supplies and observe the local way of life.
 
10:00 – 11:30: Mok Fa Waterfall: A short walk in Doi Suthep-Doi Pui National Park leads to this serene waterfall, perfect for a refreshing swim and relaxation.
 
12:00 – 13:00: Local Lunch: Enjoy a traditional Thai meal at a nearby restaurant before the trek begins.
 
13:00 – 16:30: Jungle Trekking: Embark on a 3-4 hour hike through lush greenery and bamboo forests toward the Karen village.
 
17:00: Karen Village Stay: Arrive at the village to settle in. Meet the friendly hilltribe community, enjoy a home-cooked dinner, and stay overnight in basic, authentic local accommodation.

Day 2: River Adventure & Tribal Traditions

08:00 – 09:00 Breakfast: A hearty traditional breakfast prepared by your hosts at the Karen village.

09:00 – 10:30 Morning Trek: A scenic 1-hour hike through the mountains to reach the riverside rafting camp.

10:30 – 12:30 Bamboo Rafting: Board a hand-crafted raft for a thrilling ride down the Mae Taeng River. Stop at a Lahu village along the way to learn about their unique customs.

13:00 – 14:00 Shan Village & Lunch: Arrive at a Shan village for a final local lunch and time to change into dry clothes.

14:30 – 17:00 Return Journey: Transfer back to Chiang Mai by truck, with a hotel drop-off around late afternoon.

Important Note: Itinerary timing and activities like bamboo rafting are subject to seasonal water levels for safety.

What to Bring & Packing List:

To ensure a comfortable and enjoyable private experience, we recommend packing the following items in a small-to-medium backpack (approx. 20–30L). Larger suitcases can usually be stored safely at your hotel in the city.

  • Sturdy Trekking Shoes: Cross-trainers or hiking boots with good grip (the terrain can be slippery/muddy).
  • Sandals or Flip-flops: For relaxing in the village and during the bamboo rafting.
  • Lightweight, Breathable Clothes: Quick-dry t-shirts and trekking trousers/shorts are best for the humidity.
  • Swimwear: For the Mok Fa Waterfall and the river activities.
    Warm Layer: A light jacket or sweater (temperatures in the mountains can drop significantly at night, especially from Nov–Feb).
  • Change of Clothes: At least one dry set of clothes for the overnight stay and the journey home.
  • Towel & Toiletries: A quick-dry travel towel, soap, shampoo, and toothbrush (homestays provide basic facilities only).
  • Sun Protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Insect Repellent: High-strength spray to protect against mosquitoes and jungle insects.
  • Personal Medication: Any specific medicines you require, plus basic plasters for blisters.
  • Waterproof Bag (Dry Bag): Highly recommended to protect your phone and camera during the bamboo rafting.
  • Power Bank: Electricity in the hilltribe villages can be limited or unavailable at night.

Moderate. The standard route involves hiking on Day 1 and 2. Expect mountainous terrain with some steep jungle inclines. It is suitable for anyone with a reasonable level of fitness.

Yes. We follow "Leave No Trace" principles to protect the environment. Your booking directly supports the local economy by providing fair wages to village hosts, porters, and local guides.

Basic and authentic. You will stay in traditional bamboo huts with clean mattresses and mosquito nets. Bathrooms are communal with no hot showers.

Very limited. Solar power is usually available for a few hours at night. There is no Wi-Fi and cellular signal is weak; please bring a power bank.

Depends on the group size, we typically utilize 4-wheel drive 7-seater MPV and VIP Minivan.

Tours run rain or shine. The jungle is beautiful in the rain, but we recommend bringing a lightweight poncho. Activities are only adjusted if river levels become unsafe for rafting.

Yes. Every raft is manned by a professional Captain and accompanied by your certified local tour guide. The river is usually very calm and shallow.

At your hotel. Please bring only a small daypack for the trek. Most hotels in Chiang Mai offer free luggage storage for returning guests.
